Why Manuka?

Not All Honey Is Created Equal

When we set out to formulate Ryder's Lip Balm, we weren't looking for a trendy ingredient. We were looking for the most effective, clean, and honest option available. That search kept leading us back to the same place: Manuka honey.

Manuka honey comes exclusively from bees that pollinate the Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), native to New Zealand. What sets it apart from every other honey on the market is its uniquely potent antibacterial and healing properties — recognized clinically, researched extensively, and used in wound care around the world. That’s not marketing language — that’s science.

What It Does for Your Skin

Manuka honey is one of the few natural ingredients that works on multiple levels simultaneously:

Heals. Manuka honey has been scientifically recognized for its antimicrobial and wound-healing properties, promoting tissue regeneration and helping skin recover from damage, dryness, and irritation.

Hydrates deeply. The natural sugars in Manuka honey attract and retain moisture, supporting long-lasting hydration without the heaviness of synthetic creams. It’s a true humectant — it draws water to the surface and locks it in.

Protects against bacteria. Its powerful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds help maintain the skin’s natural barrier, keeping it balanced and resilient.

Fights aging. Manuka honey is rich in antioxidant compounds that help neutralize free radicals from environmental stressors — a leading contributor to visible skin aging.

Calms inflammation. For sensitive or reactive skin, Manuka’s anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritation and calm redness without harsh chemicals or synthetic actives.

Renews. Manuka honey promotes skin cell regeneration and helps repair cellular damage, which over time can minimize the appearance of uneven texture and scarring.

Why We Use Extract — Not Raw Honey

This is a formulation decision we made intentionally, and it matters.

Raw Manuka honey is thick, sticky, and water-based. In a lip balm — which is an anhydrous (water-free) formula built on oils and waxes — raw honey simply won't blend. It would separate, pool, and destabilize the entire product.

Manuka honey extract is the solution. It captures the same beneficial compounds — the MGO, the antioxidants, the humectant properties — in a form that actually works within a clean oil-based formula. You get all the power of Manuka, delivered properly, without compromising the integrity of the balm.

We didn't choose Manuka extract because it sounds good on a label. We chose it because it's the only way to deliver the real thing — correctly, consistently, in every single jar.

Pure. Purposeful. Proven by nature.
